A hazardous cooking oil spill occurred at the Thirsk Youth Club after a neighbouring pub's large barrel of used cooking oil was knocked over onto their premises. This created a severe slip risk and blocked the club's only access route. Youth leaders attempted to clean the area by applying cat litter, which mixed with the oil to form a large, odorous, and complex contamination. Local cleaning companies were unable to resolve the issue, and as a volunteer-run charity, the Youth Club had limited finances and urgently needed specialist help they could not afford.
When we heard about the situation the Youth Club was facing, We offered to provide the necessary specialist service free of charge. After a site visit by Hygiene Sales Consultant David Franklin and Branch Manager Paul Casson, a tailored oil cleaning plan was established. The unique combination of oil and cat litter required a specialised remediation approach: manually removing and disposing of the greasy gravel, treating the underlying area with a mild degreasing agent, and replacing the surface with new gravel.
Due to the area being very narrow, machinery could not be used. To meet the customer's needs, our teams performed the entire remediation manually, requiring extensive shovelling and barrowing to remove all the oily gravel and cat litter from the area and ensuring all environmental hazards were thoroughly removed.
The site was successfully cleaned, and all environmental hazards were promptly and efficiently removed, providing a safe environment for the staff and visits. Thirsk Youth Club safely reopened and resumed its essential services for its young members without delay. By providing the service entirely free of charge, we ensured the charity's vital operating funds were preserved and could remain dedicated to supporting the local youth rather than being spent on emergency cleaning.
“TYC are extremely grateful to Rentokil that they offered to do this work - free of charge! Amazing! Not only is this very generous of Rentokil - it’s difficult to know what we would have done without their very kind support. They have promptly and efficiently completely solved a nightmare problem for us! S0 from TYC trustees, youth leaders, volunteers and all our young people – a massive THANK YOU!” – Chair of Trustees, Thirsk Youth Club
Thirsk Youth Club is a free youth club run by volunteers (registered charity 1195274). Starting in 2021 with one session/week, demand rose rapidly and today TYC runs 4 sessions every week for different age groups, engaging with over 100 young people each week. It is open to any young person aged 9-17 and aims to provide a safe space, optional activities and trusted adults to engage with.
