A major UK supermarket faced a devastating forced closure following severe flood damage. The crisis went beyond structural issues, presenting a critical biohazard risk: floors and stock were contaminated by raw sewage and dirty floodwater. The entire retail environment was compromised, posing a high risk of life-threatening contaminants like Salmonella, Norovirus, and E. coli. This demanded immediate, expert biohazard cleaning and disinfection services.
Located in a small, close-knit village, the store was a vital resource for local residents, making the closure acutely felt. With the flood occurring in December, the client promised the store would reopen in time for Christmas adding immense time constraints to the emergency flood clean-up, turning a crisis into a high-stakes race against the calendar.
Emergency cleaning was essential to achieve the supermarket's goal of reopening within a three week period. Our RSPH-trained team carried out a comprehensive on-site risk assessment to establish their clean-up project plan, this allowed our response to be focused on operational efficiency, ensuring our colleagues could be working on the store seven days a week and allowing other work that was being carried out at the store by other businesses as part of the restoration process.
To begin the restoration, floodwater needed to be removed quickly from the store, so arranging water removal tankers was an essential. This was followed by our teams utilising smaller specialist equipment such as wet vacs to do a final removal of sludge and water. Once all of the stale water was removed, a thorough deep cleaning and disinfection was essential. From floors to ceilings, every single aspect of the store had to be disinfected, to ensure it was safe for staff and customers to return to, without the risk of infection. Using cutting edge ozone-generating technology, our ozone-trained technicians finished the service by effectively removing any residual damp or sewage odours.
With a comprehensive cleaning plan in place, our RSPH-trained team successfully restored the supermarket to a thoroughly disinfected and completely odour-free state, ensuring a safe and hygienic environment for its critical on time reopening before Christmas. This exceptional turnaround left the supermarket’s project manager highly impressed with the work provided by Rentokil Specialist Hygiene.
