An all-male Category B prison was embarking on a critical seven-year renovation project. A significant obstacle was a specific wing, heavily contaminated with pigeon guano and construction rubble. Pigeon guano is a serious biohazard, carrying bacteria, fungi, and parasites that pose a substantial health and safety risk to both staff and prisoners through the inhalation of airborne particles once dry. The presence of rubble further compounded the hazard, potentially containing lead, asbestos, or pest infestations, and creating physical risks such as trips and falls due to uneven and sharp surfaces. These severe hazards rendered the area unusable, directly impeding the renovation schedule and preventing the potential expansion of prison capacity.
The project was subject to stringent time constraints, as the prison remained fully operational. This limited on-site work from 8am to 3pm, outside of lockdown hours. Any delays would incur severe financial penalties and fines for the customer. Therefore, a rapid and precisely executed response within a non-negotiable timeframe was essential to ensure the renovation, and the subsequent increase in prison capacity, could proceed as planned.
Rentokil Specialist Hygiene developed a meticulously detailed plan for the comprehensive cleaning and pigeon guano removal, specifically tailored to meet the customer's urgent requirements. This included strategic staffing to ensure an optimal number of highly trained colleagues were on-site to complete the project within the demanding timeframe. As experts in secure environment cleaning, our colleagues possess the necessary vetting, checks, and training, including essential HM Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS Enhanced Level 2) Clearance. Recognising the high-security protocols that restricted on-site imagery, a robust staffing contingency plan was prepared, allowing for last-minute adjustments and emergency callouts to ensure the prison's timeline was met without compromise.
To fully comply with prison regulations, new, dedicated equipment was sourced and securely stored on-site for the duration of the project. Our teams were equipped with specialised Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and advanced equipment to safely and effectively execute the biohazard cleaning and pigeon guano removal. Upon deployment, all debris and pigeon guano were systematically and safely removed. The entire prison wing underwent thorough disinfection, effectively neutralising all biological and physical hazards and making the area safe for both the renovation crews and, critically, for future operational use, thereby enabling the expansion of prison capacity.
Through the swift and highly efficient work of our specialist teams, the critical risk of bacterial contamination from pigeon guano was entirely eliminated. This transformative intervention rendered the environment safe for prison staff and renovation crews, allowing the project to progress without interruption. The job was completed precisely within the strict project timeline, preventing costly delays and financial penalties. More significantly, by reclaiming this previously derelict and hazardous wing, the prison can now proceed with its renovation plan to not only modernise facilities but also to increase its operational capacity, providing a more secure and functional environment for the future.
