The Health Board in the North West of England was suffering with leaking ductwork in its operating theatre. This resulted in an air exchange rate of only 16 air changes per hour (AC/H), falling 2 AC/H below the minimum industry standard. In addition, their air handling unit (AHU) was already operating at its maximum capacity of 60 Hertz. To fix this major problem the Health Board was faced with anticipated costs over one million pounds to design, build and commission a new, suitable AHU.
Our teams decided to deploy Aeroseal Duct Sealing technology on the Health Board’s ductwork, which involved injecting a fast-acting and non-toxic solution into the ductwork. Our innovative Aeroseal solution effectively sealed holes and gaps of up to 15mm throughout the ductwork. This is a long term fix that meant the system became airtight.
Thanks to the implementation of Duct Sealing Technology, the Health Board was able to avoid the costly purchase of a new AHU equipment, saving in excess of £1,000,000. As a result the air exchange increased from being below industry regulations at 16 AC/H to exceeding them at 20 AC/H.
In addition our experts were able to successfully adjust the AHU inverter down and reduce the overall fan speed as the system is now operating more efficiently. This not only resulted in significant savings to their energy bills but also reduced noise levels within the operating theatre, creating a more comfortable environment for patients and staff.
The Airtight ductwork also provided the Health Board with enhanced levels of hygiene in the operating theatre by reducing the risk of contaminants entering and circulating through the system. This is crucial for maintaining a sterile and safe environment in which medical procedures are undertaken.
