How Rentokil Specialist Hygiene Delivers Advanced Odour Removal Across the UK

What’s that smell?

When it comes to unpleasant odours such as sewage, smoke, vomit or damp many people may wrongly assume the smell will fade with time but unfortunately this is not always the case. Malodours often cling to porous materials such as carpets, plasterboard and soft furnishings becoming embedded at a molecular level.

Without professional odour removal these smells could linger for months or even years, impacting your reputation and the health and safety of those using the premises.

Here are the most common sources of persistent odours:

  • Smoke and Tobacco: Cigarette smoke contains tar and phenol particles that can penetrate upholstery, walls, and HVAC systems. Vaping smoke can also cause odour issues
  • Flooding and Mould: Water damage often leads to mildew and damp-related smells, especially in basements or underfloor areas.
  • Sewage and Wastewater: Organic decay from urine, faeces, and stagnant water can create overwhelming odours.
  • Chemical Fumes: Paint, glue, and industrial solvents leave behind volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can irritate and linger.
  • Biohazards: Bodily fluids, vomit, animal waste from rodent infestations, and decomposition are particularly strong odour sources.
Bad Odours

What premises are affected by bad smells?

Many different environments, commercial, industrial, or domestic can become host to malodours. The root cause will vary, but the outcome is typically the same: discomfort, complaints, and potential health concerns.

Your Questions Answered

How do I identify the source of the odour?

It can be difficult to figure out the source of an unwelcome odour. While it is sometimes possible to detect the source from a visual inspection of the affected area, many odours originate from hidden or hard to see sources, meaning that professional help is required to investigate and identify the source.

What is the difference between masking and removal of an odour?

Masking involves using a pleasant scent to cover up an unpleasant one to make the malodour less noticeable. This is really just a temporary solution as it doesn’t eliminate the source of the bad smell, so it will likely return once the fragrance has worn off.

Effective odour removal eliminates the source of the malodour to permanently remove it, and may include specialist cleaning solutions such as ozone treatment and deep disinfection.

What is the best way to permanently remove odours?

Most over-the-counter solutions focus on masking odours, using fragrances to cover them temporarily. These do nothing to address the root cause. In fact, repeated masking can make smells harder to detect, allowing microbial risks to persist undetected.

While methods such as masking can be bearable for a short period of time, in order to fully rid an area of undesirable smells a more permanent solution is required. Only through identifying and removing the source of the odour, deep cleaning and oxidative neutralisation, which actually breaks down the odour-causing molecules, can bad smells be truly eliminated.

What are the benefits of removing odours from my property?

Odours appear in many environments, including both commercial and domestic. Removing odours increases the work or living standard in these areas, making them much more acceptable for inhabitants. Removing sources of odours can also increase the hygiene and appearance of an area, making it more suitable for guests or customers. Without intervention, these long lasting smells can impact the health and safety of those nearby, so removing them is crucial.
