This means that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentokil-hygiene.co.uk\/sectors\/education\/\">hygiene in educational settings<\/a> is a key priority for both the health of students across the UK and their education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is therefore crucial for schools and higher education institutions to keep cleaning and disinfection protocols front of mind in order to help them maintain a welcoming, productive and safe environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.rentokil.com\/content\/local\/uk-rsh\/images\/desktop\/main_blog-imagery-desktop.jpg\" alt=\"A classroom environment with students and teacher\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Creating an environment that is conducive to learning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/janiking.co.uk\/icleanliness-learning-education\/#:~:text=It%20showed%20that%20the%20level,negatively%20on%20concentration%20and%20retention.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Studies<\/a>&nbsp;have shown that the level of cleanliness in a particular environment has a direct impact on students\u2019 ability to learn. A dirty, neglected environment can also increase stress levels and therefore impact negatively on concentration and retention of information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similar&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleaning-matters.co.uk\/page_1124421.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">research<\/a>&nbsp;reveals that 83% of teachers believe that there is a noticeable change in pupils\u2019 behaviour when the classroom is clean. Moreover, 90% of teachers claim they feel a tangible difference in their own mental health when their workplace is clean. The need to maintain a hygienic environment in the classroom and surrounding area therefore encourages both productive teaching and learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The learnings from the COVID-19 pandemic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>During the height of the pandemic, the reopening of schools was prioritised in the UK to minimise the academic and developmental disruptions to children. However, as the BMJ (British Medical Journal)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/378\/bmj-2022-071234\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">argues<\/a>; for many schools, their reopening was not accompanied by a comprehensive training package of hygiene and disinfection measures to properly protect children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whilst some schools and colleges experienced outbreaks of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/uk-news\/norovirus-outbreak-closes-school-after-20981466\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">norovirus<\/a>, for example, which forced closures prior to COVID-19, the pandemic shone a spotlight on cleaning and hygiene standards within educational institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is important that schools and colleges learn&nbsp;from their experiences, and remember the progress that has been made. A renewed focus should be placed on disinfection processes, with rigorous reviews regularly taking place to ensure hygiene standards are the highest they can possibly be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Educating students on personal hygiene<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Alongside the processes that staff and school leaders&#8217; can put in place to improve cleaning protocols, it is also important to educate pupils on the need for good personal hygiene. In doing so, actions such as regular and proper hand washing should become common practice amongst students as they are embedded into their routines.
