How to prevent squatters

Below are precautions landlords/property owners can take to help avoid squatters on your premise:

Keep your property secure when it is unoccupied
Vacant premises can attract a higher insurance premium, so make sure you are aware of the measures that are required for a vacant property
Give the impression that the property is occupied for example - have curtains or blinds, have a neighbour visits, leave radios on, and lights on a timer
Fence off or barricade vacant property
If necessary provide a security patrol
Ensure that you make regular visits in person so you are monitoring your premise
Try to avoid having the premise empty for long periods of time
If you do find individuals occupying your property without your consent contact the police immediately
