A prison cell / holding cell / lock-up is a small room in a prison or police station where a detainee is held. Cells are usually 6 by 8 feet in size with steel or brick walls. It will also have one solid or barred door that locks from the outside. Furnishings and fixtures inside the cell are constructed so that they cannot be easily broken and will be bolted to the walls or floor. Stainless steel toilets and commodes are also used.

There are a number of different types of prison and prison cell, from a simple police station holding cell to massive cell block in larger correctional facilities. In the UK, Custody Sergeants are responsible for cell hygiene, in accordance with the Human Rights Act.
