Infection Control Policies in Hospitals

All staff in a healthcare environment should participate in the prevention and control of infection. To prevent the spread of diseases, a policy needs to be in place that works effectively in everyday practice. There must be a vigilant culture as it is every healthcare personnel’s responsibility to reduce the spread of infection.

The Health and Social Care Act is the code that all NHS and private healthcare facilities need to commit to in respect to good practice. The system in place needs to support how the organisation will prevent, control and decontaminate the hospital in the case of an outbreak.

Each hospital should have an infection, prevention and control team to make sure this code is adhered to. A prevention team's obligations including:

  • Providing leadership and expert advice on methods for eliminating the risk of the spread of infectious diseases and reporting all serious outbreaks to the Health Protection Agency as necessary
  • Making medical decisions about prevention and controlling infection
  • Providing advice to all members of staff on how to manage infected patients and any other infection control problems that may occur
  • Providing information and advice to all staff and patients on the management and prevention of infectious diseases that can be caught in the healthcare environment
  • Ensuring that the infection control policies and procedures are reviewed regularly
  • Assisting department and ward managers to analyse incidents related to infection control issues
  • Working with medical staff to ensure patients are quarantined to minimise the hospitals exposure to infectious diseases
