Cryptococcosis, or cryptococcal disease, is a fungal disease associated with droppings and also grows in soils throughout the world. It is very unlikely that healthy people will become infected even at high levels of exposure. A major risk factor for infection is a compromised immune system.
It is caused by one of three species; Cryptococcus neoformans, Cryptococcus gattii and Cryptococcus grubii.
Some infections require no treatment. Even so, there should be regular check-ups for a full year to make sure the infection has not spread. If there are lung lesions or the disease spreads, anti-fungal medications are prescribed. These drugs may need to be taken for a long time.
